What is a "Marco Lens"? Everybody knows the answer: A Macro Lens is a lens which permits close-up focusing. Yes, this answer is correct, as far as it goes. You can extend the close-up range of any lens by lengthening the barrel or adding extension tubes o
r bellows. However, this does not turn your lens into a true Macro Lens!
A true Marco Lens has to be desinged for close-up work from the ground up. Optical conditions change when you approach a lens-to-filmplane distance equal to twice the focal length
which is the setting for a 1:1 (life-size) image rendition. Yes, you can get away with using just any lens for close-up but if you want exceptionally sharp close-ip images you must use a correct optical configuration at any distance, from Infinity to Ult
