In the EOS-1D, Canon blended the best of the digital and analog worlds to maintain its high standards. Buttons and switches are strategically placed in the same positions as on the acclaimed EOS-1v. Yet displays and controls that are unique to digital cameras, especially on the back panel, are laid out according to the same operational concept as the EOS D2000. The result is operation that is extremely intuitive for seasoned Canon users and easily accessible to others who are experiencing EOS for the first time. All body covers and most internal chassis components are constructed of magnesium alloy that minimizes weight and delivers exceptional rigidity. This alloy also serves as an effective electromagnetic shield, protecting internal mechanisms from electrical interference. Every external detail was designed with environmental resistance in mind. Coupled with a durable baked coating, the body provides extra durability to withstand the toughest shooting environments, and it is weather resistant
The heart of the EOS-1D's image quality: one of the largest imaging sensors in a digital SLR. As pixels on a digital imaging sensor become larger, they become more sensitive to light. This means less digital noise, superior highlights and shadow tonalities, and a wider range of contrast is likely. The EOS-1D's newly developed 4.48 million pixel CCD sensor (4.15 million effective pixels) is a full 28.7 x 19.1mm in size-with square pixels a full 11.5 x 11.5 microns in size. Another benefit of the large CCD sensor in the EOS-1D is that the lens focal length factor is only 1.3x. This means more than ever, your wide-angle lenses will behave similarly to how they do on a 35mm SLR film camera, a huge benefit to photojournalists, commercial photographers, and many other professional shooters. For example, the new EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens behaves like a 21-45mm lens on the EOS-1D. There's more to image quality than just the imaging sensor. The data from the sensor must be processed and assembled to create a finished RGB file. The EOS-1D does this using a totally new Imaging Engine, a sophisticated "chip" which produces incredible color accuracy, wide tonal range and detail while minimizing the effects of digital noise. With the reduction or elimination of this noise, professional photographers have the freedom to use long exposures where necessary. On any exposure longer than 1/15th of a second, the EOS-1D automatically activates its long exposure noise reduction.
The new large-area, four million pixel CCD imaging sensor electronically times shutter speeds, and makes possible speeds as fast as 1/16,000 of a second. EX-series EOS Speedlites can sync to an amazing 1/500th of a second. The bladed rotary-magnet shutter is durability-tested to 150,000 exposures. With a shutter release time lag of just 55 ms, no digital SLR responds faster. One of the key hurdles to faster shooting speeds is an SLR was speed the mirror could move up and down, while stopping long enough between frames for an AF system to get updated information. With Canon's original Active Mirror Control method, blackout time between exposures is a barely perceptible 45 ms, and contributes to the sense of solid responsiveness you get using the EOS-1D. Thanks to a generous buffer memory, the EOS-1D can fire up to 21 consecutive frames (at up to 8 fps) in its full-resolution, best-quality JPEG mode, And the EOS-1D can record both a RAW image, for optimum image quality and archiving purposes, and a separate full-resolution JPEG file which provides quick access and small files sizes simultaneously.
