NEW CANON SURE SHOT CLASSIC 120 COMBINES CONTEMPORARY LAYOUT AND ADVANCED FEATURES WITH TIMELESS DESIGN
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., September 1, 1999 - In this 20th anniversary year of Canon's best-selling line of Sure Shot 35mm cameras, Canon today announced the new Sure Shot Classic 120 and Sure Shot Classic 120 Caption. These new models offer state-of-the-art features in an ultra-compact, durable, and elegant aluminum body, while incorporating classic design elements from the pioneering days of 35mm photography. New and improved features of the Classic 120 series include a powerful 38-120mm built-in zoom lens with aspherical optics, a 7-mode Best-Shot Dial for convenient and automatic camera settings, a 3-point dual hybrid autofocus system, built-in dioptric viewfinder adjustment control, and a high-efficiency built-in Light Guide flash.
Hybrid Active/Passive AF System Assures Sharp Photos
To ensure pinpoint autofocus accuracy in any shooting condition, the Classic 120 includes a new 3-point, dual hybrid AF system. Rather than relying on a single AF system, the Classic 120 incorporates both active and passive autofocusing modes, automatically switching from one to the other as image conditions mandate. The active mode, which is the traditional means of focusing with lens shutter cameras, uses an infrared emitter and sensor to detect subject-to-camera distance. The passive mode detects differences in subject contrast. The combination of these two autofocusing methods assures users that focus will be sharp with each exposure, regardless of the lighting condition or subject.
Light Guide Flash System
To overcome limitations of achieving uniform illumination with compact cameras featuring conventional built-in flash systems, Canon designed an exclusive Light Guide Flash which slides outward from the side of the camera. The new flash unit is small and highly efficient, and provides even illumination from corner to corner throughout the image area. The flash consists of a kethenon tube, a small reflection umbrella, and an acrylic light guide. When compared with a conventional lens-shutter flash of the same class, the ratio of lost light is improved from more than 50 percent to approximately 35 percent.
Canon also reduced the overall size of the Light Guide Flash by eliminating the need for a Fresnel lens and a large reflector. The retractable design of the flash reduces the height of the camera during storage while increasing the effect of its red-eye reduction feature.
Original Best Shot Dial
The Sure Shot Classic 120 simplifies the ability to achieve perfect photographs with the use of Canon's original “Best Shot" dial located on the back of the camera. Offering seven different shooting modes, the Best Shot dial automatically combines several possible function settings to render ideal camera settings for specific types of shooting conditions and subject matter.
The seven shooting modes - Personal, Action, Night Scene, Portrait, Close-Up, Spot Metering, and Full-Auto, are easily identified on the Best Shot dial with icons and words. The user simply sets the Best Shot dial to the desired shooting mode and the Sure Shot Classic 120 not only determines the proper exposure, but also sets the optimum combination of AF, metering, flash and film transport.
The Personal mode is a new function on the Best Shot dial. When set, users can select any combination of settings to create their own customized Best Shot mode. Flash, exposure compensation, continuous shooting and other preferred picture-taking functions can now be selected and saved, resulting in quick access to the desired camera settings by simply rotating the Best Shot dial to the Personal mode. These custom camera adjustments will remain set, even after replacing the battery, until the photographer makes new adjustments.
Caption Model
In addition to the standard Sure Shot Classic 120 model, Canon is also offering the Sure Shot Classic 120 Caption with additional features that include optional date and time imprinting, as well as five preset captions such as ‘Season's Greeting;' ‘Happy Birthday;' ‘Congratulations!;' ‘Thank You;' and ‘I Love You'. The Caption model is also compatible with Wireless Remote Controller RC-5, which is ideal for group shots and other applications from a range up to 16.4 ft. from the front of the camera.
